Mini-Game Prototype

First Upload and Devlog.

This is the first steps to prototyping out a project for my current game design course. This first upload is to refamiliarize myself with Unreal Engine 5.6, and to utilize some objects and obstacles to create a simple mini-game.

I decided to utilize falling platforms, and construct a sort of platforming trial, first you must aquire a key on a platform above lava by jumping between smaller floating platforms that will drop over time.

After unlocking the door that the key is able to open, and progressing through, you then complete the more difficult platforming trial to make it to the other side.

First steps I took was the construction of the playable area. I wanted the first portion to be like a sort of 'easy' trial, before unlocking the door, and doing a more difficult trial. So the first area I made a bit smaller, and the second much larger. Using the falling platforms, I blocked out the route I intended the player to take, and then in the second portion, added some elevation.

After getting the rough idea, I then continued to play the mini-game myself, to test if everything was working properly, and that the platforming was actually achievable. I used my own experiences trying to travers the platforms to tune the difficulty of each jump, and assuring it was actually possible to complete. My first mistake was overestimating how high the player can jump, so most of the elevated platforms needed to be lowered, but I still think I was able to utilize them as intended in the proper areas.

All in all, it's a nice simple and concise little platforming trial mini-game, that's perfectly achievable using different approaches to each jump to fully complete the trials.
